Filmul are in centru relatia dintre un agent FBI Clarice Starling si un geniu criminal, Hannibal Lecter. Dupa o serie de crime si rapiri, agenta FBI se vede nevoita sa apeleze la serviciile fostului psiholog, pentru a o putea salva pe femeia rapita, dar pentru asta trebuie sa-i cistige intii increderea
Agenta FBI Clarice Starling este trimisa sa se ocupe de cazul unui monstruos ucigas in serie, supranumit Buffalo Bill pentru ca obisnuieste sa-si jupoaie victimele. Aceasta apeleaza la ajutorul unui psihiatru canibal aflat in inchisoare pe nume dr. Hannibal Lecter. Hannibal are o fascinatie pentru tarana agenta la fel ca si nevoia pentru crima. Un targ pe muchie de cutit se impune intre ambitioasa agenta si monstrul obsedat, insa Starling trebuie sa se confrunte nu numai cu propriii demoni, ci si cu o forta malefica atat de puternica, incat s-ar putea sa mature totul din calea ei.
